William Henry Bizzell, son of William Henry and Sarah Jernigan, was born on March 15, 1828 in Johnston County, North Carolina. He was said to be away at school when his father sent for him to join the family in its migration to Mississippi. Whjen his father died en route, William took over as head of the family and continued on to Marshall Co., MS. There he taught school and served as a plantation manager until he enlisted on the side of the Confederates in the Civil War. After returning home from the War, he married Nancy Elizabeth Calahan McGraw (called Betty) on November 30, 1865. He and Betty had 12 children.
